However, like the cosmos this silent new genre started to condense, complex, and charge with energy. The number of players were 4, there was no hero leveling, and most importantly, you played against the computer not another team of players. It was chaotic… glitchy, and well completely in the dark! There were stark differences in this game compared to later mods. This game I like to relate to the universe before it was the universe. This was the seeds that grew the first “MOBA” style map Mod called Aeon Strife by well… Aeon64 its Modder. Maps that could be shared and played online with other players. These games that literally set the foundations for the MOBA genre, had map editors within them that allowed players to create their own maps and scenarios. They had already given birth to the RTS strategy games War Craft and Star Craft. When World of Warcraft was still a twinkle in Blizzards eye. More specifically, Star Craft and War Craft mods. So what am I talking about? Well before there was the MOBA there were MODs. Watching the evolution of the genre since before it was a genre. However, some have followed this industry for sometime. While others have been playing for some time. So some of you may have only played a MOBA in the last few years. I thought I would take an adventure back in time to see how this sleeping giant came to life. So in light of Riot’s 10 year anniversary and achieving records never seen before. However, one in particular that I have followed personally throughout the years was the explosion of the MOBA genre, and the lack of foresight Blizzard games had. The gaming industry is often riddled with these tragic stories such as the N64 fallout of Nintendo, or the decline of Sega Genesis. Hindsight is 20/20 and often a failure to have the insight or the courage to take a risk that would reap amazing potential. Sometimes in life we often look back on decisions or choices and say, “What if I had done this”.
